Does anyone have a logical or scientific explanation of how this could possibly happen?!?!? On second thought, drop the logical or scientific part - does anyone have ANY type of explanation for how this could happen?????? :-)

The Upside-Down Icicle
The other day I went out to bring some fresh water to our outdoor cat, and her old water was frozen in the most bizarre fashion:

Does anyone have a logical or scientific explanation of how this could possibly happen?!?!? On second thought, drop the logical or scientific part - does anyone have ANY type of explanation for how this could happen?????? :-)

I certainly don't pretend to know science. But I wonder if when you set it down it splashed and it was so cold that ice crystals started forming upwards with the splash and continued to 'grow.' ????
Thanks for posting this - HOW INTERESTING!!!!!!!
Hi Yen family, http://patty.exn.ca/video/?video=exn20030306-planetq.asx
We cheated, and looked on the internet. The discovery channel had an explanation, and it appears that as the ice freezes in the dish, there is one small hole open, and the ice expands through the hole and "grows" into a spike.
Before we looked at the internet, our guesses were that it had something to do with a fan nearby, or a splash that froze.

I was going to say I had not a clue, but thanks to the industrious Geaschels, I am now well informed:)
Great photo!
Miss you all ~ Ortegas :0)
Our only theory was that the steam from the water (it was hot when I brought it out) formed ice crystals and continued freezing upward as the steam rose.
Thanks to the Geaschels for expounding the mystery. :-)
